Sweden — Piping & Welding at Swedish Pulp Mill

Client: Bilfinger (main contractor) Site: Swedish pulp mill Industry: Pulp & Paper Period: Multi-week campaign Services: Industrial Welding · Maintenance Turnarounds · Pipeline Installation

Context

Bilfinger is a Nordic process industry main contractor with deep exposure to the Swedish pulp and paper sector. MIDAS was engaged through Bilfinger for a multi-week piping and welding campaign at a Swedish pulp mill — the kind of embedded crew work that pulp mills need during planned maintenance windows.

Pulp mills run on complex process piping networks — steam, chemical, condensate, and utility lines — across large plant footprints. Welding and piping scope inside a mill shutdown window requires multi-process capability, codes-across-systems knowledge, and an integrated crew that can pivot scope as conditions change in the shutdown.

Scope

Multi-week campaign at a Swedish pulp mill:

  • Process piping welding and fit-up across multiple plant sections
  • Pipeline installation and tie-ins to existing networks
  • Maintenance support during a planned shutdown window
  • Integration into Bilfinger’s site management structure
  • Documentation pack aligned to the mill’s QC regime

Approach

Integration into main contractor structure. MIDAS crews slotted into Bilfinger’s site management — daily toolbox talks, permit-to-work integration, scope hand-offs coordinated with the plant’s maintenance team.

Multi-process welding. The scope covered carbon steel process piping and utility lines — TIG root / MAG fill-cap on pressure piping, SMAW where access or position required. Welders qualified on the relevant procedures before mobilization.

Documentation discipline. Test packs produced per welded joint group, with weld maps, material traceability, and NDT coordination. The documentation pack followed the mill’s acceptance criteria for return-to-service.

Outcome

The pulp mill campaign demonstrated MIDAS’s capability to embed into a main contractor’s crew structure at a live industrial site — delivering welded mechanical scope inside a shutdown window, with full documentation. It is representative of the maintenance-and-turnaround work we deliver through Nordic main contractor partners in the Swedish pulp and paper sector.
